  • HI Trees ‘mulch-o-meter’ returns for Tree Care day

HI Trees ‘mulch-o-meter’ returns for Tree Care day

The ‘mulch-o-meter’ is back and ready for action in time for the second Community Tree Care Day on Saturday 26 April.

From 10am-3pm in the Chivers field near the Holiday Inn and B1049, local residents and their family and friends, as well as groups of people from local clubs, churches, committees and businesses, are encouraged to join in this community effort to stop the 1,400 young trees planted on that site being choked by weeds. Last year the ‘mulch o’meter’ logged 671 trees that were cared for and this year the team hope to do even better.

Talking to HI HUB, HI Trees volunteer Dan Mace said: “Next time you’re driving, cycling or walking along the B1049 towards the A14, take a look at the newly planted woods in the field between the road and the Holiday Inn. (Although, if you’re driving, please do focus on the road ahead!)

“1400 trees were planted in 2021 and 2022, and they’re doing pretty well. Some are now several metres tall. This is partly thanks to the love and attention that the community has given them, both when the trees were originally planted, and at the first ever HI Trees Care Day in April last year. On that day we had about 100 people turn up to weed the trees, mulch around them and help give them the best start possible. This year, we want to do even better. The mulch-o-meter will be back, and we have an even bigger pile of mulch to spread around the trees.

“And finally… we need to name this area. If you have any suggestions, the HI Trees team wants to hear them. We can’t keep calling it ‘the Woods between the B1049 and the Holiday Inn’ forever!”

    What/when/where?

When: Saturday 26 April 10am – 3pm. Go along for as long or as little as you like. Even 10 minutes will help!
Where: Chivers’ field next to Holiday Inn, first right off the A14 (please note that note there’s no parking on site).
What: Give our young trees the best chance of thriving – we will show you how on the day. Some equipment will be provided, and if you can, please bring your gloves, spades, trowels, wheelbarrows, buckets, a drink. Please watch out for rabbit holes on the field; the ground is uneven, so please wear suitable shoes.
Who: Everyone welcome including children under the supervision of their adult companions.

  • HI HUB Board members and Volunteers

HI HUB Board members and Volunteers

HI HUB, now five years old, was established in February 2020 as a hyperlocal news service specifically for the community of Histon & Impington.

This volunteer-led organisation has three very-part-time staff. But without volunteers, the organisation is not financially viable and would close.

There are several roles that we need volunteers to fill and would love to talk to anyone who might like to be part of this exciting and unique venture.

  • Helpers needed for the Impington Music Society

The Impington Music Society (IMS) runs small concerts and recitals featuring a range of professional, semi-professional and amateur musicians, and offers performance opportunities for local musicians embarking on their professional career.  They arrange about 8 concerts a year, on Friday evenings at Impington Village College (IVC), and cover a wide range of music.

They are looking for more helpers in two areas:

    • Occasional practical help on concert evenings.
This can be anything from helping to set out the chairs before the concert, putting up signs, handing out programmes, showing people where they can get refreshments in the interval, and making sure that we leave the place tidy at the end – depending on your time availability and preference.   There is no need to volunteer for every concert; even if you are only available for one or two events, that will be a great help for our regular team!
    • Running the IMS.
Behind the scenes, our informal team of volunteers looks after the organisation of the IMS, and they would like some reinforcement to help them plan future concerts, set up ticketing and marketing or look after our very basic website and social media presence. It is quite a wide range of jobs which we share between us depending on people’s interests and available time.

If you are interested in either (or both!) ways of helping to encourage live music in the village, get in touch by email to impingtonmusicsoc@gmail.com or simply come to one of our next concerts in the Brackenbury Room, Impington Village College (Friday 10 February 2023 or Friday 17 March, both at 7.30pm) and talk to us to find out more.   We look forward to meeting you – and will waive the concert entrance fee if you are interested in volunteering!

(To reach the Brackenbury Room from the IVC main entrance, turn left down the long, curved corridor to the end.)

  • Casual Vacancy – Parish Council

    Casual Vacancy – Parish Council

A vacancy has arisen on the Parish Council following the resignation of Ros Hathorn as a Parish Councillor.

The Parish Council hope to fill this vacancy by co-option at the next meeting on 20th September 2021.  If you would be interested in being considered for this opportunity, please can you write or email by 17th September with your brief reasons for wishing to stand.  If more than one applicant comes forward there would be a vote amongst the existing Council members to fill the position.

Full Council meetings are held the third Monday monthly and there are other Committees and Working Parties you can join if you wish.

Please write to:  The Clerk, Histon & Impington Parish Council, The Parish office, Histon & Impington Recreation Ground, New Road, Impington, CB24 9LU or email clerk@hisimp.net.

  • HI HUB – come and join us!

The editorial team is taking a short break over the summer but we’ll be back in September and we’d love you to join us.

With August almost upon us, accompanied by the traditional English rain clouds, the HI HUB editorial team are taking a short break to recharge their batteries and enjoy their staycations.

Keep an eye on your weekly newsletter for jobs, events, property and planning applications though as these will continue to run through the summer, with news and features returning on 2nd September.

When we come back, would you like to join us?

To boost HI HUB’s content from September, we’re looking to expand our editorial team. Could you be interested? There are two opportunities.

You may have spotted among the job listings last week that HI HUB is looking for a trained Community Journalist on a freelance basis, to take a high profile role in writing and editing material for publication as HI HUB prepares to extend its output and reach. If you’re experienced at writing news and features for publication, it could be an opportunity for you to earn a small fee while using your skills for the benefit of your own community. We particularly welcome applications from people who know the village and would love to use their training to help connect people from their own neighbourhood.

Alternatively, you may have – even in the dim and distant past – had a secret desire to be a journalist, or simply to research and write articles for publication. We would love to hear from you. As a member of the volunteer contributor team (we’re all volunteers right now) you would simply work with more experienced writers and editors to create articles that keep local residents in the know about what’s going on, and the opportunities available to them. Don’t worry if you’re not an experienced writer – all we need is a desire to find out what’s happening and the enthusiasm to have a go. Others are available to help with style, grammar and everything techie – if you need them.

    Get involved

HI HUB has exciting plans for the future and we’d love you to be part of them. We’ll hold a get-together for the editorial team in September, and we’re trying to organise some training. It would be great if you could join us.

If you want to talk through anything about the volunteer or Community Journalist roles, just drop a line to news@hihub.info and we’ll get back to you.

Have a great summer and see you in September.

  • Chair of the Board of Trustees – CPET

Chair of the Board of Trustees – CPET

Cambridge Primary Education Trust (CPET), who have 5 schools, including the Infant and Junior Schools that will become the Histon and Impington Park Primary School and Histon and Impington Brook Primary School through primary schools in September 2021, are looking for this new voluntary roles.

Chair of the Board of Trustees (Voluntary Role) to replace the current Chair who is standing down at the end of their term of office in December 2021, and the Trust is seeking to ideally appoint a new Chair from the new school year commencing September 2021, to coincide with the start of the school year and ensure a handover is in place. This is an opportunity to participate in an exciting development in primary education, both in relation to the development and execution of CPET’s strategic direction and in day-to-day responses to the overall evolving context of education and community.
