Histon FC will be fundraising for charity and commemorating a landmark occasion in the club’s history this weekend when they will be hosting G.N.G Oadby Town FC at Bridge Road. Kick-off for the match on Saturday 5th April is at 3pm.
The club will be raising funds for the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity at the match. They recently announced an 18-month partnership with the cause, and will be helping to fundraise and increase awareness of the charity’s work. One generous local business has even gifted the charity advertising space at the ground and paid its sponsorship for two matches.

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity will be attending Saturday’s game, collecting donations and answering any questions supporters may have. Histon FC has also gifted matchday tickets to the family of a patient who was cared for by the charity.
The cake stand will be selling homemade sweet treats before the game and at half time. Mascots Arthur Bear and Histon Hound will be making appearances throughout the day and will be around for photos with supporters.
Paul Smart, Finance Director at Histon FC, said: “The charity has supported many members of the Histon Football Club family both past and present and no doubt will support many many more in the future. They have an excellent facility and staff, but would simply not survive without donations.”
The sponsorship partnership will continue for the remainder of this season and throughout the 2025/26 season. Jodie Vaughan, from the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, added: “Our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved!”
Celebrating past achievements
The occasion will also be celebrating The Stutes’ past achievements, including their famous win against Leeds in the FA cup in 2008 and near promotion to the football league.
Past players have also been invited to Saturday’s game and will be mingling with supporters. Among them will be record goal scorer Neil Kennedy who scored over 300 goals for the club.
Update 9/4/2025. HI HUB has been informed a photograph sent for publication in this original story was not of Neil Kennedy, Histon FC’s record goal scorer. It was actually Adrian (Ade/Aidy) Cambridge. Histon FC has apologised for the mistake, particularly to Neil and Ade. The match’s final score was 3-1 to Histon FC and raised just under £1,000 for the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity.
Twelve months. Twelve sporting challenges. Twelve hours each. Martin Dickson tells Lucy Callington why 2025 will see him pushing himself to the edge of his physical limits.
For Impington resident Martin Dickson, 2025 looks likely to be a bit busier than usual! The not-quite fifty-year-old was inspired by his approaching half century, to take on a huge challenge for a cause that is very close to his heart.
Taking on a different 12-hour physical trial every month for 12 months, Martin will be trying his hand at everything from cycling and circuit training to football, pickleball and padel – with the aim of raising £12,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Martin, who works at Girton based care home Arlington Manor, is no stranger to adventure. Before settling in Impington in 2013, he travelled extensively and lived in many different countries before meeting his future wife, Sinead on a bus in Laos. Taking on a charity challenge at 50 is just the next chapter.
Daunting and challenging
Martin explains: “I wanted to test myself, and inspire people, but it’s more than a little daunting too. I’ve taken part in sports for years, so I know I have a good fitness level, but each sport is going to be a proper test and only real determination, with my inspirational family in mind, will keep me going throughout them all. Some of the challenges are sports I play regularly while others I have only dabbled in. I just hope I am fit enough to survive them all!”
Martin racked up almost 200km and £800 in 12 hours on a bike this January
Martin kick-started his challenge in January with a gruelling 12-hours of cycling, hosted by Arlington Manor. “It went very well”, he tells me. “I had residents, family members and people from right across the community come and join in, support and donate.
“I was pretty sore for a few days, but managed just under 200km on the bike and had lots of generous donations – raising over £800”.
Giving back
Twelve months of pushing yourself to the limit takes real dedication and Martin’s inspiration for this challenge comes from two very special people – his mum and dad. “Both of my parents were true inspirations to me and my family, and to countless friends, neighbours and colleagues”, he shares. “They touched so many people and cancer took them both from us far too early. Mum was only 44 when she passed away and Dad was just 59”.
Martin’s Dad was a born sportsperson; an excellent rugby, football and tennis player and also a dab hand at squash and table tennis, while his Mum’s passion lay in supporting their local community and volunteering for various charities. Martin has clearly inherited both parents’ strengths and qualities – putting them to great use in this year’s challenge!
“Macmillan were incredible during their illnesses, supporting our whole family so wonderfully”, Martin tells me. “Without them I’m not sure how any of us would have been able to keep going, and I wanted to give something back to help others in the same position”.
Tough trials
Having taken the decision to undertake the challenge just last September, Martin wasted no time at all in committing himself to planning the year-long schedule of events. Some months are still in the planning, but next up is a 12-hour session of circuit training on 16 February, followed by pickleball on 29 March and badminton on 26 April.
I ask him what does he think will be the hardest challenge? “I am slightly dreading the 12-hour circuit training in February”, he reveals, “as I haven’t really been a regular at the gym for about 15 years! The running one is going to be hard, but it’s likely the football challenge on 24 May is going to be the toughest. 5-a-side football is hard at the best of times but 12 hours straight up! I dread to imagine what my feet will look like at the end. Plus, gathering together enough people to play and support could also be tricky!”
Moral support
Martin would love as many people as possible to join in with his challenges or even just come along and offer their support. “Having people involved is going to make or break these challenges”, he enthuses, “and if anyone is able to come and join in, that would be fantastic”.
And into the future? Does Martin have any further fundraising plans? “Never say never”, he smiles, “I have fundraised often and always for Macmillan. I’ve taken part in two 100-mile bike rides and a 12-hour tennis match as well as many runs, walks and sporting events over the years. However, this is my biggest challenge yet so I may need to keep 2026 a little quieter to allow my aching body a chance to recover!”

Impington school pupil Erin Edwards represented England at roller hockey in the Eurockey Cup, held recently in the Costa Brava, Spain.
The Impington Village College (IVC) year 7 student took part in the Eurockey Fem15 – an all-female category of the tournament – with her club team, Ely & Chesterton United (ECU), playing up from her age group, alongside athletes up to 15 years old. Roller hockey or – rink hockey as it’s sometimes known – is a fast-paced, growing sport played on roller skates with a ball and hockey stick.
Erin has now been invited to travel to Portugal with an England Academy squad in 2024 for training and matches. Commenting on her sporting success, Erin said: “I love playing roller hockey, as it’s fun and fast and pretty much non-stop!”

It’s been a tricky start to the season for new young players earning their spurs in the club’s First team. John Payne reports on some highs and lows on the pitch.
It’s early days, but the size of the task faced by Histon FC in the Northern Premier League has become a lot clearer after some mixed results in the first month of the season. Injuries to key players and a shortage of experienced campaigners has also hindered manager Lance Key’s plans, and he’s still actively seeking players of the right calibre to add some depth to his young squad. The Stutes currently sit in 16th position in the league table.
After defeats in the opening two matches of the season, the club got their season up and running with a solid 2-1 victory at Wisbech Town. That was followed by a draw at home to Sutton Coldfield Town but a 3-0 defeat at Spalding United on Bank Holiday Monday dented any hopes of a run of results.
The need to strengthen the squad was no better demonstrated than on Tuesday evening when a squad deprived of three key players had to travel to Warwickshire to face Bedworth United. With six teenagers in the starting eleven, the game ended in another defeat and left the Stutes with a record of one win, one draw and four defeats to their name
One of the main talking points among Stutes fans has been the number of players used so far this season, with many of the club’s own youngsters being given their opportunity to show the manager what they are capable of. But it is clear that the First team squad is still a work in progress as Lance looks to strengthen in some positions while looking for his best combinations in others.
Many of the fresh faces to have appeared in the red and black shirts this season have graduated from the under 18s side, having developed their skills last season and impressing further in the pre-season friendlies. Seventeen-year-old Alex Stevens-Lee scored the club’s first goal of the season after coming on as a second-half substitute at Belper Town on day one of the season and promptly slotting home an equalising goal. Finley Wilkinson has also found the net on a couple of occasions this season and had shown maturity seldom found in a nineteen-year-old. Lewis Mair, Kai Nicholls have also featured as they look to progress in the game.
The Stutes entertain Coleshill Town on Saturday with a 3.00 pm kickoff and are again at home on Tuesday of next week against old rivals Corby Town with a 7.45 kickoff. Tickets are available from the club website at www.histonfc.co.uk where details of all future matches can also be found.
