Living her dream – 10 years of Anya Lois Hair

As Station Road salon Anya Lois Hair raises a glass to ten years of business here in Histon & Impington, Amanda Borrill catches up with young entrepreneur and founder Anya Lois Cooper and hears how, with a lot of support and determination, dreams really can come true.

“When you support a small business, you really are supporting a dream”, writes Anya as she announces on social media the plans to celebrate ten years of her very own hair salon – the self named Anya Lois Hair.

Just 21 when the opportunity to open her own salon arrived, Anya has proved that age is no barrier to success and despite a few initial, and perfectly understandable, doubts around whether taking on such a challenge was the right thing to do, has made it through ten years. Thanks, she says, to the support of her amazing customers.

A passion for all things hair

For Anya, the salon is a dream she has held since she was a young girl. Inspirational mum, Shiralee Gristwood, is well known here in the community for her successful Milton-based tailoring business, Shiralee Alterations, and creative ambition, it seems, runs in the family.

Growing up and attending school here, it was a Year 10 opportunity to take up hairdressing as a subject at Impington Village College that drove this very early passion for all things hair. Work experience and an apprenticeship in that same work experience salon followed, and Anya’s future career path was beginning to take shape.

Aged just 19, she decided to take the plunge, leave her job and go it alone with her own mobile hairdressing business. Every moment of her spare time was spent delivering leaflets – raising awareness and slowly, but surely, building up her future clientele. She began to research potential rentals around Cambridge until, cycling down Station Road Histon one day early in 2015, spotted a sign in what had been Jane’s Frames advertising availability to rent. A chat with her parents ensued and the deal was done. The keys were handed over at the beginning of March and, with a lot of help from family and friends, doors opened for business at the end of that same month.

Ten years since that opening day, the salon has 4 staff working in Anya Lois Hair – all of whom, Anya smiles, share the same passion she does for hair. But, as for many businesses, the ride has not been without its bumps in the road and plans to expand back in 2019 were about to be thrown into disarray. “I was all set to employ more staff”, Anya recollects “and make the most of the extra space. But then, in March 2020, we were all put into lockdown because of the pandemic.”

    Hair-raising days of lockdown

The struggle without our hairdressers was real! Few will forget the bad hair days of lockdown and our nation’s unruly tresses being shared across social media feeds. “It was a really strange, unknown time as I imagine many others would agree”, reflects Anya. “As a business owner, it was really odd being told ‘you can’t go to work’. Not knowing when the salon would be able to reopen was very stressful. Luckily, when we did finally reopen, we had the extra space taken on pre-pandemic enabling a safe space to accommodate essential social distancing measures.

“I will never forget the day we were given the green light to reopen. I had my work phone at home and, within minutes of the announcement, it was going crazy for days on end. Before this I was worried I wouldn’t have a job to come back to after seeing people giving hairdressing a go on friends and family in their homes during the lockdown. How wrong I was though! Our services were well and truly needed and our hairdressing skills appreciated more than ever.”

And, as seems to be a recurring pattern here in the village, once again it was the love of community that kept Anya afloat. “I will forever be grateful to those wonderful clients that called and messaged during this time just to check in and see how I was. I believe the people of Histon & Impington are a big part of the success of Anya Lois Hair through their support of local and small businesses.”

    The love of a community

Clearly, there is much joy to be gained from being a business located in the heart of H&I. “I am very thankful to have my salon here”, Anya tells me, “it is a lovely community in which we have been lucky enough to build strong relationships with local residents; offering a relaxing atmosphere for clients to unwind and enjoy their salon experience.

“Being in the village”, she smiled “we often see a lot of returning customers but are always welcoming new customers too. It’s lovely to bump into familiar faces inside and outside of our working hours”.

It is plain to see this mover and shaker in the world of hair is truly a force to be reckoned with. Just 31 years old now, and with ten years of a successful business behind her, Anya has much to celebrate going forward.

Six months ago, she married boyfriend Dan Cooper. They met on holiday in Tenerife and tied the knot on their ten year anniversary in October last year. But who is brave enough to do the wedding hair of the hairdresser, I asked? “My great friend and stylist who used to work for me called Molly did my hair”, reveals Anya. “She left me to go self-employed and specialises in extensions and bridal hair. I asked the girls who work with me now if anyone fancied doing my wedding hair for me and they all went quiet! I think it was a bit too much pressure”, she laughs.

Across the community, the love for Anya runs deep. I have heard so many good things whilst preparing for this feature and the comments on her Facebook post celebrating their ten year celebrations match these offering well wishes including – ‘congratulations to you, here’s to many more successful years’, ‘well done on an amazing achievement’ and, slightly more jokingly, ‘many thanks for the 9 years of sheep shearing you have given me!’

Congratulations and happy 10th birthday Anya Lois Hair!

  • Barley Mow franchise back on the market

Less than a year after Lyndsey and Mark Ward took over the running of Histon pub, the Barley Mow, the franchise of this village local is up for renewal again.

Lyndsey and Mark took over the pub on 25 March last year – moving into the village with their young family with the aim of creating a community pub here in Histon & Impington.

    Troubled times

The last few years have seen several changes at this village pub beginning with the retirement of landlady of 30 years, Dore McCann, in October 2023 and the subsequent departure in February 2024 by her successors after just a few months at the helm.

Responding to HI HUB, Lyndsey Ward said: “Yes, we have decided to leave. Unfortunately the village hasn’t been as welcoming as we’d hoped although we have had some amazing customers that have supported us.

“We would like to hope that the new people coming in continue to push the pub to its potential and keep it a family friendly place. Also hoping they don’t have the trouble that we have endured over the last few months.”

    Potential opportunity

Listing this latest opportunity on their website, Greene King Pub Partners talks of the benefits to a future Hive Pubs franchisee including the pub’s recent full refurbishment, a good size garden and ‘a community in Histon offering affluent home owners and plenty of passing/commuter trade’.

The five-year franchise agreement offers also personal three bedroom accommodation, a guaranteed income of £20,000 per annum plus a percentage of net food and drink sales.

A Greene King spokesperson said: “We are seeking a new franchise operator to run The Barely Mow. Anyone with pub management experience looking to run their own pub with the full support of Greene King should contact our recruitment team.”

Full details of the franchise can be found on the Greene King Pub Partners website.

Railway Vue back on track as new managers take over

Punch Pubs owned community local, the Railway Vue, is once again open for business with new managers ready to welcome the community of Histon & Impington.

The pub closed at the start of 2025 and saw Lance Key and Raimonda Aleksiejute take over just a few weeks later, opening to the public on 17 January.

Locals to the area, Raimonda and Lance have considerable experience in the hospitality industry with Lance having previously run the Hop Bind on Cottenham High Street and Raimonda gathering her bar and kitchen expertise at the nearby White Horse in Oakington. Talking to HI HUB Raimonda said: “We are hoping to create a welcoming and friendly local with hearty homemade pub food – offering a choice which will attract customers as good value for money”.

Customers will, however, have to wait a little longer to sample the new menu as the planned refurbishment, including kitchen extension, is not forecast until later in the year. For now the pub will be offering drinks and bar snacks only.

    A warm welcome for all

Brand new meat raffle is launched at Railway Vue. Image their own.

“We are hoping to welcome both new and existing customers to help us rejuvenate the pub”, Raimonda added. “Our message to everyone is please give us time to put our own stamp on it while we work with our staff to bring back to life this much loved village local.”

The pub welcomes well behaved dogs and will be screening sports events, hosting live bands for music nights and plan a weekly meat raffle – the first of which has already been advertised on their Facebook page.

A Punch Pubs spokesperson told HI HUB: “We are delighted to share that the Railway Vue in Impington has re-opened with new publicans, Lance and Raimonda, at the helm. We plan to invest in the pub later this year, and we will be able to update the community as those plans progress. The Railway Vue is a fantastic and much-loved pub, and, together with Lance and Raimonda, we want to see it continue to thrive and serve the community for many years to come.”

  • Shop Local – supporting and strengthening our community businesses

As we move into Step 4 of the Roadmap out of lockdown, HI HUB reports on four female-led independents hoping to walk away with a 2021 ‘Muddy’ award, and plans to support all local businesses through the months ahead.

On 19 July we entered Step 4 of the UK government’s roadmap out of COVID, lifting many of the legal restrictions imposed during the pandemic. Timed to coincide with the end of the school term and the warmer months, when more activities can take place outdoors, this relaxing of the pandemic rules brings with it both relief and confusion as our local businesses strive to ensure that visiting customers continue to feel safe and secure.

    Keeping it local

Shopping locally brings many benefits. For us personally, it brings with it the chance to get to know our community better, benefiting our mental health and wellbeing. For the community as a whole, it strengthens our economy and provides employment. And for the environment, it lowers our carbon footprint with more opportunities to make journeys on foot or by bike. All great reasons to keep it local!

The past 16 months has seen our local businesses tested in ways nobody could ever have anticipated and the support of the community as they claw their way back will be vital if we are to hold on to the diverse range of businesses we are lucky enough to enjoy here in Histon and Impington. It is with this in mind that HI HUB, in collaboration with our Parish Council, is planning a village-wide initiative this autumn aimed at promoting the benefits of ‘Shop Local’ with some great deals for business owners and the community alike. Look out for more news on this exciting project here on HI HUB in early September.

    Leading the way

Coming out of the restrictions with a few minor scratches but still with big smiles on their faces are four female led H&I independents, all hoping to earn a 2021 Indie business Muddy Stilettos award. Now in its eighth year, the much coveted ‘Muddies’ showcase lifestyle businesses across 25 counties in 27 categories ranging from Best Art Gallery to Best Yoga/Pilates studio.

Taking up position in the shortlist for Best Beauty Salon is Estelle’s Histon High Street, fronted by Estelle Ashdjian. Having been open officially for only 16 weeks, and faced several setbacks due to the various lockdowns, Estelle told HI HUB “We are so happy and grateful to all our clients for nominating us. It is amazing being up for our first award, especially with us having been open such a short time. It would be incredible to win!

“The support we have received locally since opening has been amazing with people constantly messaging to compliment us or book in after being recommended by friends. We have had the best start we could have asked for. It is marvellous too that the three other H&I finalists are all run by remarkable business women”.

Overjoyed with her nomination in the Best New COVID Biz category is Sarah Barnes with Cool Beans Coffee Co. Sarah and her little blue van has been a sight for sore eyes during lockdown, dispensing joy in the form of lattes and tasty bites across our villages and beyond.

I asked Sarah what it meant to be a finalist in this very unique category: “I can’t really take it in that, from serving my first coffee as the sun came up on Christmas Eve 2020, I am now in the finals for the Best New Covid Biz, and that really is testament to the amazing community that we live in.

“I am so grateful to all of you who have come out regularly in all weathers for a coffee and a chat at my little blue van. It has been a privilege to get to know you all and a massive thank you to everyone who nominated Cool Beans to get me into the finals. Please take the time to get behind all our fantastic local businesses who have overcome many hurdles during the last year. It would be brilliant if Histon & Impington could claim to be home to all the winners!”

Blooming happy in the category of Best Florist is Lucy Hill and the Gin House Flowers team. Since popping up in the previously empty School Hill unit (now occupied by Stir) Gin House has built up a strong community relationship here in H&I and is now finally happily embedded in its new home on Histon High street where their beautifully decorated shop brings joy to passers by.

Lucy, Mr Gin House and Frankie – described by Lucy as ‘the real boss, florist extraordinaire, Prosecco lover and maker of the most beautiful bouquets’ – have fought their way through the many challenges thrown at them over the last 16 months coming out smelling of roses on the other side.

Read also: “I can’t put into words how much I missed being here”

Lucy is thrilled to be nominated and told us: “It’s amazing to be recognised after such a tough 16 months. The support from the village has been overwhelming; not just for ourselves but the other nominees also. To win would be incredible but to just get this far has been fabulous”!

The fourth local finalist, and nominated in the category Best Gift Shop, is Topiary Tree.

Located adjacent to our beautiful village green, in the unit previously occupied by Daisy Chain, Topiary Tree’s opening has also been thwarted many times along the way by COVID lockdowns and restrictions. But owner Alison Douglas was determined not to allow lockdown to stop sales and, for several months, the shop went online with Alison offering local deliveries. Fully open since April, Topiary Tree customers are now, once again, able to enjoy gift browsing in person.

Alison shared her joy at being nominated: “I feel privileged to be a finalist for Best Gift Shop in Suffolk & Cambs. The support from customers (old and new) has been inspiring since re-opening on my own and I would like to thank all those who have voted for me. It proves what a great village Histon is to live and work. Good luck to everyone.”

Voting in all categories closes at 5pm on 23 July so there is still time to vote for your favourites. Winners will be announced on 29th July.

The past 16 months of uncertainty have brought with them many hurdles to jump for all of the businesses here in Histon & Impington. If you are an H&I business and wish to register an early interest for our autumn Shop Local campaign, or would like to join our growing list of Business Directory members, please drop an email to Mel Lerway, Publishing Manager, via admin@hihub.info and she will ensure all relevant information is sent out to you before launch.
