  • Top award for local library volunteers

Volunteers from Histon library are among the team recognised for the initiative, seen as a lifeline for many in the community.

The hard work of local library volunteers was recognised last month as Cambridgeshire’s Library@Home initiative was presented with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

During the ceremony, library helpers were presented with an engraved crystal and a certificate, signed by the late Queen (one of the last documents to be signed by Her Majesty.) The prestigious award is the equivalent of an MBE for volunteer groups.

A team of volunteers at Histon Library are part of the scheme, bringing books and audio materials to local residents who find it difficult to get to the library for a range of reasons, including disability, illness or caring responsibilities.

Visits can be tailored to residents’ specific needs, with volunteers delivering people of all ages large-print books, health literature and even hearing aid batteries straight to their homes. Helpers even have time to stop for a chat.

Cambridgeshire County Council Volunteer and Health Development Manager, Elizabeth Sheppard says: “This is brilliant recognition for the amazing work our Library@Home volunteers do. These dedicated volunteers have provided a lifeline of friendship and books over many years, and especially during the Pandemic.”

The crystal award and certificate will be on show at libraries across Cambridgeshire throughout the year. And in May 2023, two lucky volunteers with the Library@Home service will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace along with other recipients of the 2022 Awards.

If you’d like to find out more about volunteering for your local library, email volunteers@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or ask in your local library.

  • Histon Library – have your say on new building plans

Proposals for our brand new library building on School Hill are about to be published and Cambridgeshire Libraries wants your input. Here’s how you can get involved.

The new library building on School Hill has now been handed over to Cambridgeshire County Council and the work to transform it into a library will commence this summer before finally opening to the public in the autumn.

From Monday 12th July, the proposed plans will be available on the mobile library currently situated in the old Infant School grounds. They will also be available on the Cambridgeshire Libraries website.

Before these plans are finalised, Cambridgeshire Libraries would like to hear from our community with its thoughts on both the design and book stock recommendations. Two online meetings are scheduled; one with the designer and another with the library staff, where you will be able to hear more about the plans and share your feedback with the people directly involved in the project.

Cambridgeshire Libraries is also designing shelf ends that will be distinct to Histon library and is seeking images of Histon and Impington which sum up our community and the ethos of our library to adorn the new shelf end panels. If you have photos you would like to submit, please email them to the Area Library Manager, Terri Lewis, at BarHill.Referral@cambridgeshire.gov.uk and the planners will look at incorporating them in the designs.

An online survey is also now available, where Histon and Impington residents are invited to share their thoughts on book stocks and opening times. You can access the survey here.

‘Meet the designer’ will take place at 2pm on Tuesday 13th July, with the Library Staff Zoom planned for 6pm on Thursday 15th July. To attend either of these meetings, please email Terri Lewis and a Zoom link will be forwarded to you.

  • Have your say on the new Library

Cambridgeshire Libraries are holding two Zoom meetings where you can virtually meet the new Library Designer and Library staff and give feedback on the new Library internal plans and book stock recommendations. A copy of the plans will be available to view on the Histon Mobile Library from Monday 12th July.

The meetings will be held at 2pm on Tuesday 13th July with the Designer, and 6pm on the Thursday 15th July with Library staff.

If you wish to attend one of these meetings, please email Terri Lewis, Area Library Manager on BarHill.Referral@cambridgeshire.gov.uk.  A Zoom link will then be forwarded to you.

Shelf ends that will be distinct to Histon Library are also being designed.  Using the email address above, please share any images that you feel sum up Histon and the ethos of the Library and they could be used in the final design.

Internal work on the new Library will be carried out over the summer. The new Library is scheduled to open early Autumn.
