  • A big high five for HI HUB!

A big high five for HI HUB!

As HI HUB celebrates five years of hyperlocal journalism here in Histon & Impington, Amanda Borrill reflects on how local news is every bit as important as the headlines splashed across national media.

Take yourself back to 1 February 2020 – the calm before the storm. A brand new style of community communication in the form of hyperlocal journalism was about to launch here in Histon & Impington and was quickly going to prove more valuable than any of us could ever have anticipated.

Launched into a socially distanced ‘new normal’

For HI Fibrecrafter Moira Neal – lockdown was a time for making masks.

Within weeks of HI HUB’s launch, in an attempt to shield us from the COVID-19 pandemic which was ripping across the world like a murderous wildfire, the UK entered lockdown and the virtual world would soon become our ‘new normal. Working lives were about to change dramatically. Working from home made the need to be online savvy more important than ever, and the arrival of the Zoom call – our pathway to maintaining a link to friends, family and neighbours – offered a new way for the community to come together and share in social and commemorative events.

HI HUB’s focus veered towards tightening community connections as we strived to encourage the village to sign up to our weekly newsletter. Restrictions on public gatherings left our What’s On pages looking sadly bare whilst our News started to fill with vital health notices from the local GP and info from our village schools. Features focused on pandemic related topics including ways to make use of your daily outdoor exercise allowance, how to get a socially distanced drink and stories of how people were using their time getting creative and finding ways to give back to the community.

We covered charitable missions, sourdough baking, jam making, virtual scout camps, nurturing our frazzled mental health, keeping our sanity in lockdown and, ultimately, at the end of 2020 the long awaited news from Cambridge’s Addenbrookes Hospital of a potentially life-saving vaccine.

HI HUB’s role in the community was beginning to take shape and the need and value of a trustworthy independent news source becoming ever more apparent.

Getting to the heart of local politics

Nowhere is reliable fact-checked information more valuable than during election season. Regulated by Impress (the independent monitor of the press), HI HUB operates within strict codes of integrity with a full complaints procedure in place.

Party political broadcasts and door-to-door leafleting deliver a certain level of news but information and answers on those local issues that really matter to a community can be harder to come by. In its five years of publication, HI HUB has covered the 2024 general election, introducing its candidates to those with the power to elect them; reported on multiple local elections including District and County; explained boundary changes; and alerted residents to by-elections and Parish Council (PC) elections too.

Reporting of news from our Parish, County and District councillors is vitally important and HI HUB has offered our community a deeper insight into the activities and decision making of our local representatives – not without a little controversy along the way. Without HI HUB’s reporting, though, where would the community have read news on the very real topics that impact us all; including planning decisions, Parish Council spending, community grants, PC meeting outcomes and more.

    Supporting and assisting our community

Over the years, the editorial team has become very familiar with the topics that really matter to people and stories relating to our local GP surgery, new business, crime and what’s happening with our local pubs is always top of the weekly newsletter pops.

Back in 2022, local news met national with the country and villagers alike mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The HI HUB team worked hard to ensure the grieving community was aware of memorials and public acknowledgements including then PC Chair Denis Payne’s reading of the Proclamation of accession to the throne of King Charles III on our village green and the subsequent, happier, celebrations of our King’s 2023 coronation too.

Through our online pages, the community has been invited to read about the adventures, anniversaries and antics of many a village club or group – including the much loved HI Fibrecrafters, HI Runners, HI Drink and Draw, our community choirs, Histon Hornets, Histon FC and our long-running local Womens Institute.

Fundraising efforts by village groups and clubs are bolstered by HI HUB’s support. HI Friends’ plans ahead of and during our Queen’s platinum Jubilee celebrations were shared with our readers. Our coverage of events across the community in Features and on our dedicated What’s On pages offers free high quality publicity simply not available otherwise. Write-ups from events and initiatives including quizzes, the village fireworks, Holiday at Home, the innovative Swish, Histon Manor’s glorious events, Feast Week, the work of HI Trees, fundraising bi-annual Open Gardens and record breaking Histon Beer Festival are among those featured over the last five years.

    Real lives

For the HI HUB writers, real lives matter and five years of features have seen some real gems put under the spotlight.

Steve at home with owners Clare and Jake in 2020. Steve’s heart condition sadly meant they lost him in 2022.

Uplifting stories of charity haircuts and charity shops, quirky tales of benches and cat burglars, adventures underground, a parachuting pensioner, borrowed dogs on walks, dancer hitting the big time, a pitch perfect footballer, a young musician with a passion, teens with a cause, local ‘celebs’, high flying ladies, long-time village volunteers and a village’s fond farewell to a much loved community superstar.

Add to these the poignancy and very personal stories of a cancer scare, living with life-changing speech loss, a heartfelt personal legacy, coping with grief and the untimely loss of some very special people and we have five years of community collaboration, dedication and care by a team of enthusiastic writers who share a passion for communication. Long may it continue!

Thank you to everyone who has written or contributed to a HI HUB story during the past five years. We value your support immensely. To all our sponsors and supporters too – thank you! We hope to see many of you at our anniversary event this Saturday 1st. If you are interested in joining the HI HUB team, we would love to hear from you. Find out more about what’s involved here.

  • HI HUB anniversary to bring improved services

HI HUB anniversary to bring improved services

A new ‘What’s On’ email, higher profile for local traders and businesses, a sharper focus on current job vacancies, and better terms for promoting events outside the village are among a raft of new initiatives being launched to coincide with HI HUB’s 5th birthday.

    Knowing What’s On

The recent closure of HILights magazine was the catalyst for re-thinking how to offer a better service to those who run events in the village.

Administrator Kate Jakubowska, who works with community groups to present their events online, explained: “The number of news items, features and events in the Thursday HI HUB email newsletter has grown a lot over the years, and we felt the events deserve higher profile.

“Most of these take place thanks to the very hard work of many local residents.

“By launching a separate email to promote them, we hope to instantly raise their profile and encourage more people in the community to support them.

“But we also recognise that the world doesn’t end at the village boundary. Whilst we only offer free listings for events taking place in the village, we also want to ensure that our community knows What’s On at other locations nearby. That’s why we have reduced the price for listing these events from £30 to just £10.”

    Better coverage

Community groups are being encouraged to tell HI HUB about their events using an online form to post a What’s On listing and any posters or related photos. A news form can now be used to suggest stories, and capture details about interesting activities, achievements and initiatives in the village.

While the regular ‘News’ emails will continue on Thursday afternoons, the ‘What’s On’ email will be sent on Tuesday afternoons, aiming to give readers more time before the following weekend to open and read it, and put dates in their diary.

Also in that email will be links to the other ‘temporary’ listings, namely property for sale and to rent, and job vacancies.

Chris Cox, who runs the village Job Club, explained the changes to the jobs section: “The local jobs market has tightened a bit recently, so listing all the individual jobs available – not grouped by employers each week – will help everyone to spot the vacancies that appeal to them more easily.

“The jobs where applications are still being accepted will appear in the email, and on the website they will be tagged ‘current jobs’ and listed on a separate page.”

    Business opportunities

Opportunities for businesses to promote themselves to the Histon & Impington community have also disappeared with the loss of HILights, so giving local traders a high-profile space to talk to readers was a priority for the relaunch.

Chris Cox is also in charge of the HI HUB website and email services. He said: “A very limited number of advertising slots will be introduced into the emails and embedded in the news and feature articles online, so that local businesses can continue to promote themselves to residents.

“We know that digital advertising can be very effective, but are conscious that too many adverts can be a real turn-off for readers, so we will be strictly limiting the number that appear – striking the right balance between them being highly visible but not annoying!

“HI HUB is a not-for-profit publication, so it goes without saying that all the revenues we generate from advertising go towards sustaining the future of HI HUB. We want this to be a winning formula for local traders, local residents and HI HUB itself.”

  • It could be YOU!

    It could be YOU!

As HI HUB approaches its 5th birthday, the need for more community involvement has become vital. Liz Hill explains why.

On 1 February it will be five years since HI HUB was launched in the village, offering a hyperlocal news service specifically for the community of Histon & Impington. It is one of around 100 or so similar public interest news publishers across the UK, most of them serving much larger areas.

A not-for-profit organisation, HI HUB has been admitted to the Independent Community News Network, is involved with the Public Interest News Foundation and operates to the exacting professional standards required by press regulator Impress. But nonetheless it is a micro enterprise which is volunteer-led. The board works with three very-part-time staff and a team of volunteers. Without volunteers, the organisation is not financially viable and would close.

    Looking ahead

What’s more, to ensure that HI HUB can continue serving the community for the next five years and beyond, more volunteers are needed. Expanding the wonderful team of people who contribute their time and skills free of charge will help give HI HUB a secure future – so that’s what we want to do.

Yes, it could be YOU! Training can be given to anyone with the enthusiasm and aptitude for the wide range of activities that come together to provide HI HUB services for the community.

So that no volunteer is asked to contribute an unreasonable amount of time, we have identified ‘bite size’ roles in many different areas. We would love to talk to anyone who might like to be part of this exciting and unique venture which is the envy of many other communities in South Cambridgeshire.

There are volunteer and board roles that we would like to fill.

    Volunteer roles

    • Feature writer

To write a minimum of 3 feature articles per year on subjects agreed with the editorial team. All contributors are given full editorial support and everything published is subject to HI HUB’s ‘two pairs of eyes’ policy before publication.

    • Researcher

To search for job and volunteer vacancies in the village and post them to the website

    • Copy editor

To be part of the team who read, raise author queries (if required), edit and upload news and features created by the writing team.

    • WordPress developer

To look after ongoing maintenance to make sure the technical aspects of the site are up to date, generate reports and help to implement new features.

    • Fundraiser

To identify potential sources of funding, sponsorship, advertising and donations, and work with the Administrator and board to convert leads.

    • Graphic designer

To create digital adverts on behalf of advertisers and work with the board and WordPress developer on the visual development of HI HUB.

    • HR adviser

To advise the board on HR-related issues, including contracts and management systems.

    Board roles

    • Chair

To succeed the current chair, setting board agendas, convening board meetings, initiating and responding to ideas for organisation development, and supporting other board members with issues that arise.

    • Commercial lead

To advise on marketing strategy, sales strategy, sponsorship and fundraising, including advising the Administrator who implements campaigns.

    • Editorial co-lead

To work alongside current board member Amanda Borrill, advising on editorial policy and content, contributing to editorial planning, advising volunteers, supporting journalists and maintaining the relationship with PINF and ICNN.

    • Financial lead

To advise on financial issues, including the annual budget, supporting the Administrator who maintains the accounts (Xero) and liaising with sponsor Streets on annual returns.

    Come and find out more…

Even if you think volunteering for HI HUB is probably not for you… but it just might be… let’s have a chat. To celebrate our 5th birthday we will be in the Library from 10.30am to 12.00 on Saturday 1st February, followed by 12.00 to 1.30pm in the ‘bottle room’ at the Red Lion. We can tell you more there.

But whether you can or can’t join us then, we will soon be holding a meeting at a local venue to explain more about what HI HUB does and answer questions.

To be kept informed about this, with no obligation at all, simply email admin@hihub.info and we will add your name to a Doodle Poll to find the date that most can attend.

If you can’t make that meeting, or if you’d prefer an initial one-to-one chat with the most relevant member of the HI HUB team, we can arrange that instead.

We need you – and we very much hope to hear from you.

  • HI HUB team to meet local residents

As HI HUB reaches its 3rd anniversary, the team behind the launch and publication of this hyperlocal news and information service will be presenting a talk at Histon Library.

Explaining what’s involved in bringing this unique resource to the local community, the session – part of the library’s ‘Engage in the Afternoon’ series – will include some of the facts and figures behind the popular weekly newsletter.

It will also include an insight into how features are developed and some examples of the challenges and dilemmas that arise in hyperlocal news coverage.

Readers and residents will be able to meet the team, ask questions, make suggestions and give feedback on their experience of HI HUB and how they would like it to develop in the future.

The Challenges of Hyperlocal Journalism’ will take place at Histon Library on Wednesday 15 February 2023, 2.00 – 3.30pm.

  • Highlights of 2022: HI HUB’s most-read articles of last year

Whether you’re bidding a fond farewell to the year gone by, or sighing with relief that it’s over, it’s good to look back at the events, opportunities and challenges that have been shaping the lives of the Histon & Impington community over the past 12 months. Liz Hill takes a look through the 2022 archive.

Like most years, 2022 brought us a mixed bag of blessings and challenges. But, freed in March from two years of pandemic restrictions, nothing was going to stop the community from making the most of every day.

As the shadow of Covid passed, residents took every opportunity to be ‘communal’ again, with familiar fixtures such as the Beer Festival, the Fireworks Extravaganda and The Feast making a very welcome return.

Beer Festival Committee members (l-r) Keiran Harvey, Don Kelly, Colin Myles and Tim Sparks.

    New beginnings

Joining them on the events calendar were some wonderful new entrants to the community diary. Histon Manor’s Dahlia Show showcased the amazing work of our local growers (and bakers); Histon Library launched its monthly Engage event series in its warm and welcoming new premises; and Holiday at Home presented an action-packed schedule for older residents.

    Jubilee celebrations at the Rec.

As if that wasn’t enough, HI Friends stepped up with an amazing weekend of activities to help us celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in style.

Many other anniversaries were also celebrated in 2022.  Among these, the Litter Pickers marked 12 years of Big Tidy Up Saturdays; Sue and Surinder clocked up 25 years serving customers at Station Stores; Histon Hobblers have been running for 20 years; and the Opportunity Playgroup reached its Golden jubilee.

Kimberley Skinner (second from left) meets the Queen at Rosie Maternity Hospital in 2013. Photo Kimberley Skinner.

The village has also welcomed a number of new businesses, all contributing to the thriving environment we live in. Among these are Iconic Health and Beauty, taking up residence in the former Geographer café; Redmayne Arnold and Harris filling the space left by the re-located Cambridge Building Society; and even a new school, Hope Tree,  catering for autistic girls.

    Challenges

It wasn’t all good news, of course. In September the community paid its respects following the death of the late Queen Elizabeth, sharing memories of her many years on the throne.

Truffle the pig – removed from the community orchard for repair.

Water (and the lack of it) was a persistent theme throughout the year. Heat and drought were the major challenge to gardeners throughout the summer, but at other times it was too much water that caused the problems: a burst water main, a blocked drain, and flooded roads all demanded urgent action.

Crime in the village was mercifully low compared with many other areas, but there were nonetheless reports of theft at the allotments, vandalism at the Rec and vehicle crime. The perpetrators of a spate of burglaries that took place the previous year were apprehended and at least one of them convicted.

Longer term issues facing the community continue to raise concerns. Changes in flight paths have brought more air traffic to the skies above the village; road traffic problems outside Park Primary school have yet to be resolved; Trinity College continues to lobby for a Science Park on green belt land in the village; and – of course – residents are exercised by the potential implications of the Congestion Charge consultation that took place throughout the autumn.

    What interested you?

Here at HI HUB we’ve been busily sharing news, features and information with the community for coming up to three years now and we’ve learnt a lot about what interests people. To give you an insight into what everyone else wants to read about, here’s our round-up of the most-read items we published in 2022.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year – we look forward to delivering more to you in 2023.

  • Community Journalist – HI HUB

HI HUB are looking to recruit a part time Community Journalist to support the further development of HI HUB, the online publication serving the community of Histon & Impington. Preferably connected to or familiar with Cambridgeshire in general, and the Histon & Impington community in particular, the successful candidate will be competent at sourcing material and writing content for online publication. The role will suit a trained journalist with experience of news writing, feature writing and editing. Working collaboratively with the existing team of volunteer writers, who have varying levels of writing experience, will be a key part of the role. This role is initially for 6 months from October to March 2022 (start date tba) but is likely to be extended and potentially expanded into 2023.

To apply: Please email a full CV and covering letter to admin@hihub.info, including links to news and/or features you have written that have been published online.

    Closing date: 30 September 2022

  • Administrator – HI HUB

HI HUB are looking to recruit a Part Time Administrator to drive the further development of HI HUB as a valued and sustainable communications resource serving the community of Histon & Impington.

To apply: To apply please email a full CV and covering letter to admin@hihub.info.

    Closing date: 29 October 2021

  • HI HUB – come and join us!

The editorial team is taking a short break over the summer but we’ll be back in September and we’d love you to join us.

With August almost upon us, accompanied by the traditional English rain clouds, the HI HUB editorial team are taking a short break to recharge their batteries and enjoy their staycations.

Keep an eye on your weekly newsletter for jobs, events, property and planning applications though as these will continue to run through the summer, with news and features returning on 2nd September.

When we come back, would you like to join us?

To boost HI HUB’s content from September, we’re looking to expand our editorial team. Could you be interested? There are two opportunities.

You may have spotted among the job listings last week that HI HUB is looking for a trained Community Journalist on a freelance basis, to take a high profile role in writing and editing material for publication as HI HUB prepares to extend its output and reach. If you’re experienced at writing news and features for publication, it could be an opportunity for you to earn a small fee while using your skills for the benefit of your own community. We particularly welcome applications from people who know the village and would love to use their training to help connect people from their own neighbourhood.

Alternatively, you may have – even in the dim and distant past – had a secret desire to be a journalist, or simply to research and write articles for publication. We would love to hear from you. As a member of the volunteer contributor team (we’re all volunteers right now) you would simply work with more experienced writers and editors to create articles that keep local residents in the know about what’s going on, and the opportunities available to them. Don’t worry if you’re not an experienced writer – all we need is a desire to find out what’s happening and the enthusiasm to have a go. Others are available to help with style, grammar and everything techie – if you need them.

    Get involved

HI HUB has exciting plans for the future and we’d love you to be part of them. We’ll hold a get-together for the editorial team in September, and we’re trying to organise some training. It would be great if you could join us.

If you want to talk through anything about the volunteer or Community Journalist roles, just drop a line to news@hihub.info and we’ll get back to you.

Have a great summer and see you in September.
