Cracking colouring competition creates Easter ‘egg-citement’

A recent move into more prominent and accessible new premises is enabling Histon High Street property lawyers, Hayward Moon, to expand their connections within the local community.

Just before Christmas last year, the firm reached out to nearby Brook Primary School to donate surplus files and other office supplies no longer needed due to their relocation and, from this, came the inspiration for an Easter colouring competition.

Conveyancing assistant Megan Johnson told HI HUB: “We felt this competition would be a great way to support the children’s wellbeing. It was initially solely with Brook Primary School. But following its success, we hope to get involved with other local schools too later in the year.”

Entries received were of such a high standard that Hayward Moon were unable to settle on a Top 3 and so an additional 4th prize was added.

    Prizewinners

    1st Place – Bea year 2, class 2RD

Hayward Moon’s Karen Wilson and Megan Johnson rear left and right. With Bea (front right) 1st prize and Hayley 2nd prize winner. All permissions given.

    2nd Place – Hayley year 3, class 3IH

    4th Place Naomi Year 1, class 1JR

First place winner Bea was awarded a Vue cinema voucher and a large Easter egg. Second, third and fourth prizes were each gifted a medium egg and a small egg was given to all entries taking part as “they were all incredible”, Megan revealed.

Sharing their joy, first place prize winner Bea said: “I really enjoy drawing I like bright colours and flowers, it took me two hours. Yummy, wow I can’t wait to go to the cinema.” And Hayley told us, “mine took me two days, I stuck gems on mine.”

Park and Brook Primary schools each came top out of 21 competing schools at the South Cambs School Sport Partnership Big Schools Cross Country competition at Wimpole Estate on 29 November.

The annual event saw over 1,000 participants run the 1-mile track that looped out around the estate. Over the course of eight races Brook Primary School were able to retain the title of Year 5/6 Team Winners by an incredible 150-point margin, while for Park Primary School the Year 3/4 team competition was a much closer call.

Despite it being only the second year that Park Primary School took part, they came out on top of the highest five scorers to receive the winners shield. Brook Primary also came third in the Year 3/4 team competition.

Partnership manager Claire McDonnell said: “There were lots of incredible performances but for me the highlight was listening to the children cheering on their team mates as they went through the start area and again at the finish line in front of the house. Lots of them told us how they felt really happy, proud of themselves and pleased to represent their school.”

  • Schools facing disruption as union gears up for strike action

Schools facing disruption as union gears up for strike action

Histon & Impington schools could be faced with a strike by teachers and non-teaching support staff if the National Education Union (NEU) is unable to secure an acceptable pay deal for their members.

The union says they have called the strike due to “a crisis of recruitment and retention within the school system” which they attribute to “a decade of falling pay”.

Four provisional dates have been set for the strike: 1 February, and 1, 15 and 16 March. NEU members working in Histon & Impington schools may choose to take part on those days, but the situation will remain unclear until the last minute unless an agreement is reached.

At Impington Village College (IVC), it is estimated that more than half of the teaching staff could take part in industrial action. As such, the school has taken the decision not to open on strike days. Instead, students will be set the DfE-recommended five hours of remote learning per day, with plans in place to cater for students with EHCPs and the children of critical workers.

Headteacher of Brook Primary School Jonathan Newman explained in a letter to parents and carers: “…we are not always aware of precisely how many employees intend to join the strike action as individuals are not under any obligation to notify us in advance. As a result, this can make predicting the impact of action difficult.

“We hope to be able to remain open as much as possible during the strike, but we are aware that a number of our staff are members of the NEU and that, consequently, some disruption is possible…”

Parents and carers from Park Primary received an identical letter. Both primary schools and the Meridian Trust, to which they belong, are neither supporting nor opposing the NEU action. They are urging parents not to discuss the strike with members of staff and are asking staff to avoid discussing their personal views on the action with parents, carers and pupils.
