Following the very successful winter opening of Histon Manor gardens in 2022, which sold out within 24 hours, owners Katherine and Rob Mann, are repeating this event on Saturday 11 February from 10am to 3pm. All proceeds will go to HI Friends charity.

The snowdrops, which were magnificent in 2022, are dotted along the banks of the moat and in the woodlands. Visitors will also be able to see the newly installed Monet-style bridge leading onto the island.

There are two types of ticket:

Tea and Cake and entry to the grounds: 100 tickets are available at £6.00 per ticket which will include a slice of homemade cake and tea or coffee served in the Manor House kitchen. These tickets are for hourly slots for the refreshments to enable everyone to be able to sit down and relax in the beautiful kitchen. Visitors are welcome to spend as long as they like walking around the grounds. Children under 7 are welcomed free of charge with each accompanying adult.

There will also be 200 free tickets for entry to the grounds only, which will not include refreshments. No ticket is needed for children under 16. As these tickets are free of charge, there will be a bucket for donations towards HI Friends.

  • From little acorns to mighty oak trees – planting volunteers needed

HI Trees Action Group is looking for volunteers to help with the planting of 15-20 oak saplings as part of the Histon & Impington Green Gateway restoration project.

It is hoped these saplings will grow to replace some of the trees that failed during the long hot summer of 2022. The group would like to recruit a few extra volunteers to help get the job done more quickly. Sharing a request on their Facebook page, team leader Dan Mace wrote: “We have been offered some oak saplings. Can anyone help with planting and, possibly if enough volunteers come forward, also some weeding and mulching?”

The planting will be in the field adjacent the A14/Holiday Inn Impington, starting at around 2pm on Saturday 4 February. Volunteers will need to bring:

    – a spade for planting and mulching

    – trowel or fork for weeding

    wheelbarrow for mulching (optional)

    – boots and weather-appropriate clothes

    – their own refreshments

If you are able to help with this project, or would like more details, contact Dan Mace on dan.r.mace@gmail.com

  • Record ticket sales see fireworks event donations soar for village schools

After a 3-year absence from the community calendar, 2022’s Fireworks Extravaganza has seen record ticket sales with the highest ever grants donated to each of the three village schools. Several smaller sums were gifted to local organisations whose help on the night aided the safe and smooth running of the event.

Speaking to HI HUB, event Chair Dan Mace said: “We were delighted to see so many people come along to enjoy this event and the huge number of tickets sold has resulted in us being able to make significant donations to the local school PTAs, as well as other organisations who help make the event a success. We counted 3800 people through the gates and would like to thank every single one of you for your support”.

Lighting up the sky. A memorable moment from 2022’s display captured by Penny Reeves.

This year the event surplus was £9,585 and the committee agreed to make donations totaling £9,309.  Approximately 80% of the money went to parent-led organisations at our schools:

    Donations were also made to:

    • £520 to 1st Histon Scouts who managed and ran the novelty and sweet sales on the night.
    • £520 to Panther Explorers who marshalled the car park.
    • £509 to IVC 6th Form for the purchase of a new Barista style coffee machine. The 6th form volunteers did an excellent job marshalling during the event and then stayed on to clear up afterwards in very wet conditions.
    • £130 to Choir 2000 for use of their stage.
    • £130 to Histon & Impington Litter Pickers for the loan of litter picking equipment for the Sunday clear-up.

The fireworks team also paid tribute to their sponsors, supporters and suppliers.

These included Redmayne, Arnold and Harris, Brookfield Groundcare, the Red Lion Histon, Edd Stonham and Avanit Systems Ltd for arranging this year’s first e-ticketing, Pure Professional Recruitment, Estelle’s Beauty, Sam Nightingale Travel Counsellor, Cambridge Stove Installations and Precedence Technologies for their domain and web hosting services.

Scoff ‘n’ Nosh, Sam’s Thai and Verrecchia ice cream and crepes fed the crowds and the dedicated couple who have brought their fair ride along over many previous years returned once more for 2022. Essex Pyrotechnics – without whom there would have been no display at all – provided the fireworks for the display along with the all important mandatory firer training.

The 2023 event will take place on Saturday 4th November. Look out for further information in the autumn.

  • Is it time to revive your street’s Neighbourhood Watch?

Is it time to revive your street’s Neighbourhood Watch?

The words, ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ may call to mind the twitching curtains and nosey neighbours of yesteryear, but as Cedric Foster found out, coming together with your street can offer peace of mind and a lot more…

Did you know that there are currently just nine Neighbourhood Watch (NW) schemes covering streets in Histon and Impington? With a population of over 11,000 – that’s a small proportion of streets represented.

Residents of Winders Lane, as far as the junction with Clay Street, are the latest to get active on local security, by resurrecting a NW scheme that had been dormant for more than thirty years. New signs have appeared on local lampposts and neighbours keep each other up to date and share any concerns via a WhatsApp group.

    Getting hands-on

Histon and Impington NW groups form part of a broader network across Cambridgeshire, each with its own volunteer area coordinator, with the aim of keeping their communities safer.

Activities the security-conscious residents take part in range from litter picking and local tidy-ups to connecting with the local police to learn about campaigns and initiatives that may affect them.

John Fuller, the South Cambridgeshire area coordinator, explained to me: “People join Neighbourhood Watch for many different reasons. Many residents wish to improve safety around their home and street, while others simply want to feel part of an active community and meet new people.”

Having an active NW can also play a part in finding and apprehending criminals through reporting information and sightings to the police .

    Getting covered

Roads in Histon and Impington which are registered to be part of NW schemes include Impington Lane; Pages Close; Parlour Close; Aingers Road; Burkett Way; Park Lane; School Hill; Windmill Lane & Bell Hill; Muncey Walk (bordering with Narrow Lane) and New School Road.

    Getting involved

John believes the benefits of joining up are clear: “As well as reducing and preventing local crime and anti-social behaviour, having a NW scheme can also reduce fear of crime, which in turn helps improve residents’ quality of life.”

Setting up a new NW in your street could also capitalise on the feeling of community spirit and cohesion many people experienced at the height of the Covid pandemic, when neighbours came together in a way that they perhaps hadn’t previously.

Many streets started WhatsApp groups at that time in order to look out for elderly or sick neighbours or just to help with shopping or errands, so there are already networks established, just waiting to be turned into official schemes.
