  • Helpers needed for the Impington Music Society

The Impington Music Society (IMS) runs small concerts and recitals featuring a range of professional, semi-professional and amateur musicians, and offers performance opportunities for local musicians embarking on their professional career.  They arrange about 8 concerts a year, on Friday evenings at Impington Village College (IVC), and cover a wide range of music.

They are looking for more helpers in two areas:

    • Occasional practical help on concert evenings.
This can be anything from helping to set out the chairs before the concert, putting up signs, handing out programmes, showing people where they can get refreshments in the interval, and making sure that we leave the place tidy at the end – depending on your time availability and preference.   There is no need to volunteer for every concert; even if you are only available for one or two events, that will be a great help for our regular team!
    • Running the IMS.
Behind the scenes, our informal team of volunteers looks after the organisation of the IMS, and they would like some reinforcement to help them plan future concerts, set up ticketing and marketing or look after our very basic website and social media presence. It is quite a wide range of jobs which we share between us depending on people’s interests and available time.

If you are interested in either (or both!) ways of helping to encourage live music in the village, get in touch by email to impingtonmusicsoc@gmail.com or simply come to one of our next concerts in the Brackenbury Room, Impington Village College (Friday 10 February 2023 or Friday 17 March, both at 7.30pm) and talk to us to find out more.   We look forward to meeting you – and will waive the concert entrance fee if you are interested in volunteering!

  • Cut hedges back now to avoid summer overgrowth, says Council

Cut hedges back now to avoid summer overgrowth, says Council

Residents with garden hedges adjoining pavements and public footpaths are being urged to cut them back before the main breeding season for nesting birds, which lasts from March to August each year.

Cambridgeshire County Council’s Highways Department wants to remind home owners to tackle their hedges now to prevent new growth obstructing pavements over the summer.

However, some birds may nest outside the main breeding season, so it is important to check for active nests before cutting. Anyone who has to cut during the nesting season for some reason should check for nests first and only use hand tools.

The RSPB warns: “It is an offence under Section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built, or to intentionally kill, injure or take chicks or adults, or intentionally take or destroy any eggs.”
