Dating in the Iron Age: brooches, bones and Bayesian – HIAG Talk

Dating in the Iron Age: brooches, bones and Bayesian – HIAG Talk

The next talk from Histon and Impington Archaeology Group will be held by Zoom on Monday 14th February at 7.30 p.m. It will be given by Dr Sophia Adams,  Curator: European Iron Age and Roman Conquest Period, British Museum.

Dating for the Iron Age is all about who you know and where you met them!

Traditional methods of dating based on connections between the type and style of objects provide relative dates but are difficult to test, and modern radiocarbon dating has had limited impact as there are problems with the calibration of dates for this period. This talk will introduce you to the actual processes of radiocarbon dating and describe how a radiocarbon dating project at the University of Glasgow (using Iron Age brooches) enlisted the help of Bayesian modelling to get around the  problems of dating objects from this period.

Use www.hiarchaeology.wordpress.com/contact to register for this free talk: a Zoom link will be sent in advance.  HIAG members receive the Zoom link automatically.
