The Fenwick Hoard – and events in Colchester around the ‘Boudican revolt’
with Ben Holloway, Project Officer, Colchester Archaeology Trust
The second talk in our 2021/22 series will be held at 7:30pm on 18th Oct via Zoom.
It deals with events of AD61 when the native Britons revolted against the Roman occupation of Britain and burned the Roman towns of Colchester, London and St Albans to the ground. In Colchester, they also massacred the inhabitants. We now know that, as the Britons approached Colchester, a wealthy Roman woman in the town buried her valuables under the floor for safe-keeping. The Boudiccan destruction layer provides a sort of snapshot of the Roman town and a fascinating record of the concrete details of the revolt. The treasure is beautiful and rare and gives us a glimpse of wealthy Roman life – it also tells a tragic story of one individual in the revolt.
